Discount Dahl

After a festive period of dietary and financial excess, this month’s free sample creates a meal to make amends on both your purse strings and waistline! Eaten all over India, dhal is a tasty and nutritious meal and this garlicky version flavoured with cumin, mustard, turmeric and coriander easily comes in at pennies per portion!

Ingredients

  • 3 cloves of garlic - thinly sliced
  • 200g red lentils or yellow split peas
  • 30g butter or 2 tbsp oil
  • 100g peas
  • 100g spinach
  • 2 finely chopped tomatoes OR a handful of roughly chopped coriander (or you can use a mixture of them all)
  • Rice for 4 and natural yogurt to serve

Method

  1. Simmer the lentils in 500ml water with the DISCOUNT DHAL SPICES in a covered pan for 30 minutes (a bit longer for split peas) until the lentils have broken down to form a thick sauce (stir occasionally to prevent them sticking on the bottom and add a splash of water if the pan starts to dry out too much)
  2. 15 minutes before the dhal is ready, cook the rice
  3. When the dhal is cooked fry the garlic in the butter or oil for 1 minute or until beginning to brown. Stir all the butter and garlic into the dhal with ½ tsp salt and the peas then cook for 2 minutes or until warmed through
  4. Serve the rice and dhal with the yogurt on the side
