For a long, long time there's been chat about doing a pop-up here at the Spicery HQ. A chance for us to meet some customers, get some direct feedback, maybe put some faces to twitter aliases and generally just chew the fat (hopefully not in the literal sense). After moving to our new Bristol premises the excuses of too small a kitchen, not enough chairs, rubbish oven etc etc no longer held up so it was time to send out an email to our local customers to see who'd like to join us for an evening of fun and merriment.

The 'Restaurant' (given as much glamour as possible in what is effectively a 1980's open office)

Suze and I had the challenge of cooking for 22 guests plus a few team Spice members. Cooking for 22, no problemo. Cooking a 3 course meal for 26ish that doesn't look like our usual super-size pan of dahl and rice cooker full of rice, slightly more tricky.

To make the first one a little easier for ourselves we adapted our A Spicery Christmas Big Night In so with a practice or 2 (lucky for the staff at lunchtime) and a couple of days in the prepping we had ourselves a Spicery Pop Up Menu which was as follows:

Bhajis, shish kebabs and aloo tikki served with tamarind chutney, green chutney and tomato chutney

The starter --------------- Masala chicken, pilau rice, red cabbage & balti gravy served with garam masala potatoes, garlicky greens, cranberry chutney & cauliflower cheese --------------- Mango and saffron kulfi served with cardamon and pistachio shortbread

The pud

On the eve of the event James gave our guests the full Spicery tour (probably soon to be rated in trip advisor's top 10 things to do in Bristol) with Shabba, Josh, Amy and Jess taking coats, pouring prosecco and making everyone feel welcome.

The meal seemed to be an all round success. Everyone left full and happy, some a little tipsy and we got some useful feedback regarding our product. A big thank you to everyone who joined us and keep your eyes peeled for our next event which will be some time early next...
