The three classic dishes of Hungary - goulash, paprikas and porkolt - are all simple stews of diced meat and onions, but the crucial ingredient is always the world famous Hungarian paprika. The Ottoman Turks introduced the capsicum plant to Hungary in the 16th Century, though it didn’t really gain widespread popularity until the 19th Century when growers produced the paprika pepper with a consistent mild heat level and beautiful bright colour.

  • 600g diced beef
  • 2 rashers of bacon (any type)
  • 2 large onions
  • 1 pepper (any colour)
  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 tomatoes
  • Gnocchi, egg pasta or potatoes and sour cream to serve
  • 100ml vinegar (white wine or cider vinegar is best)
  • 75ml oil (sunflower or vegetable oil is best)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • Large lidded pan
  • Mixing bowl

This is by far my favourite from the Spicery so far. The sauce is so rich and delicious, it goes perfectly with the gnocchi and pickled cucumber. Hearty comfort food at its finest.

This kit came in our Family Friendly Bundle. It is very easy to make and the flavours are warming and wonderful! Kids devoured it (12, 10, and 5). We chose new potatoes instead of the gnocchi pictured on the kit - perfect for soaking up the sauce if you slightly mash them with your fork. Love the pickles so much, we were wondering if there's any chance you'll just sell the seasoning packet for it? We're hoping for a bumper crop of home grown cucumbers this summer, and this would be a great way to use them! We'll definitely be ordering this kit again!

This is a very delicious recipe. It made an incredibly rich goulash, perfect with gnocchi and a dollop of sour cream. It’s a mild recipe so my child also loved it. Very quick to prepare and get into the pot, I just had to leave it simmer away!
