Refried beans are a staple food in Mexico. Cheap, nutritious, delicious and extremely versatile, they're served as a side dish, as a filling for tacos, quesadillas or burritos and even in the morning alongside Mexico's favourite breakfast huevos rancheros!

- 2 x 400g tins of black beans - including all the liquid from the tins
- 50g white cheese (eg feta, Lancashire etc) to serve (optional) - crumbled
