Injera (a fermented pancake-like flatbread) is the national dish of Ethiopia. Served at every meal it’s also used as a plate and is perfect for sharing and mopping up sauces and stews. Here we’re serving it with some wonderfully aromatic Ethiopian dishes - chicken and egg doro wat, tomato shiro, green bean fasoli stew and a fragrant chilli sauce called kocha kocha. The colonial Italian inspired panna cotta for dessert is flavoured with kahawa (Ethiopian cardamon infused coffee) and makes the perfect end to a romantic meal.

Shared a Date Night in Addis Ababa with our two daughters and partners over Zoom. Delicious food - brought back memories of visiting one of the couples in Ethiopia 2 years ago. The doro wat was a speciality! (It's a shame you've cropped the photo to remove the green bean fasoli dish!)

This is a great photo, Chris - we're so happy you were able to share this meal (albeit virtually!) and that it brought back happy memories of your trip to Ethiopia. Happy spicing!

Just seen this on the wall of fame and was shocked to see it only rated as 3 star. We thoroughly enjoyed this meal, one of our favourites and we've had some real good ones. I think you really need to combine all the flavours, eating it like a wrap, rather than treating each part separately. That way you really get the best from this dish. The coffee flavoured panna cotta was a great way to finish this meal. Thanks for providing a unique experience and something I haven't tasted before.

What a brilliant picture, Lee - fantastic job! It's always great to try something completely new and we're so glad to hear how much you enjoyed this dish. Happy spicing!

Different but delicious

Ethiopian cuisine is a bit unfamiliar to lot of Brits, but we think it's delicious, and we're so glad to hear you thought the same! It looks like you did a brilliant job!

4/5

The doro wat was nice (although didn’t like the egg in it), loved the shiro & the green bean fasoli and the dessert was delicious. Not keen on the kocha kocha sauce or the injera (bread/pancakes)- we found them a bit stodgy. Overall, we enjoyed the meal & it was nice to try something different.

Thanks for your feedback, Claire - Ethiopian cuisine is a bit unusual to some, but we're glad to hear that you enjoyed the meal as a whole, and it's always good to try something completely different!

We really enjoyed this. It brought back lots of happy memories of going to our local Ethiopian restaurant, back when eating out was a possibility! The injera worked surprisingly well and the doro wat was delicious. I wasn't sure how the panna cotta would turn out but it was gorgeous. Definitely one of my favourite puddings from the date night boxes.

Hopefully you'll soon be able to go back to supporting your local restaurant, but we're so glad this gave you a fix of delicious Ethiopian cuisine in the meantime! We're so happy to hear you enjoyed it, and were surprised by that gorgeous coffee panna cotta!

We had lots of fun creating these dishes together - each one was delicious and so unique! Looking forward to the next date night pack to arrive!

We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your taste of Ethiopia, and doesn't it look great in your lovely tableware! We can't wait to see which part of the world you venture to for your next Date Night!

I wondered about the boiled egg in the main but it worked fabulously! The recipe works brilliantly if you just follow the instructions step by step. This was a gift subscription from a close friend and she is thrilled how much I am enjoying it. 2 of out 6 so far received!

Sometimes you just need to roll with it and wait for the results! We're so glad you were pleasantly surprised by your taste of Ethiopia, and we can't wait to see what you make next!

Unfortunately this was our first pack from Spicery. It was soo disappointing. Couldn't eat the kocha kocha, it really wasn't for us. The fermented injera taste wasn't enjoyable. The green beans were very odd at room temperature. Chicken was edible but as a whole dish was just too unusual for our tastes and most ended up going to waste. The dessert is what earnt it 2 stars and after a disappointing main it was relief to enjoy something from the pack

We're so sorry to hear that this wasn't one of your favourites Kate, but glad you enjoyed the dessert! Let us know if you'd like us to send you a different box to try as a replacement, otherwise we hope the next box will hit the spot for you!

It was varied, totally new culturally and flavour wise. We both thoroughly enjoyed cooking it. I was glad to try some Ethiopian food. We also tried the Moroccan Tagine recipe for the free sample. This was even better!

WOW this looks like a delicious date night, great to hear you enjoyed this!

Kocha kocha incredibly bitter, the bean dish average though wife like it, egg did nothing for the main dish which was ok, the injeeras were huge and again not great I gave them to the dog, the shiro not too bad.. desert sickly and not to my taste. Interesting experience especially as it all smelt terrific whilst being prepared but just didn’t really deliver.

Thanks for your honesty Steve. This Ethiopian one seems to have divided opinion a bit - some loved it, some really didn't..... Let us know if you'd like us to send you something else as a replacement as it sounds like it really wasn't to your taste, otherwise we hope the next box will hit the spot for you!

Absolutely fantastic - easy to follow recipe because the Hubby did a super job lol. Looking forward to next month.

WOW everything looks amazing, the injeras are incredible and we love the red dishes too- a delicious date night!

An amazing meal - our first taste of Ethiopian cuisine and we were not disappointed!

Looks like a delicious meal and we love the painting too- cheers!

Yummy, very authentic flavours and great fun to cook up a storm !!

WOW such a romantic and delicious date night meal, hats off to the chef! <3

We loved being transported to Ethiopia this month! Particular highlights were the sourdough pancake/crumpet type flatbreads (Injera) which were really easy to make and the curry sauce for the chicken with the runny yolk of the eggs providing richness.

WOW this looks like an absolutely delicious date night and incredible injera- we're loving the funky patterned bowl too!

4/5

As with all date night boxes, loved this one as well. The green bean fasoli tasted so fresh. The flavours were so surprising. It was great

WOW this looks like a delicious date night and incredible injera, it's great to hear that you really enjoyed this and we love the orange place mats!

This wasn’t for us we found it very bland and tasteless. Anyone that doesn’t like much flavour in there curry would like this. one of our children that thinks every curry is too hot loved it though. Dessert I thought was lovely but my husband didn’t like it.

We're so sorry to hear this wasn't one of your favourites, glad you enjoyed the dessert though! I have passed your feedback on to the recipe developers and in the meantime if you get in touch with us via email, we can arrange sending you another spicebox to try that you might prefer!

Loved everything but my pancakes were a bit stodgy- probably my lack of skill working with yeast!

WOW- everything looks delicious and the beautiful blue crockery is absolutely stunning!

Our favourite course ☕️

The perfect end to a romantic meal, with a nice glass of red to wash it all down with- looks like the date night of dreams!

4/5

Quite a lot of prep but thoroughly enjoyed the date night.

Lovely! Looks like a cosy and romantic delicious date night at home, great job on the injera too!

5/5

Can't fault it. The cooking aromas were gorgeous and the taste definitely matched! The chicken dish - doro wat - was the star of the show for us but all the dishes tasted amazing. Easy to follow instructions although it took us about 2 hours to cook from start to finish. Worth it though. Just wish we'd started cooking an hour earlier!

WOW this looks like a spectacular date night feast, glad you enjoyed this!
