Javanese Curry with Bakwan Jagung and Sambal Bajak
| Description | The Indonesian island of Java is home to over 145 million people - a diverse population made up of mostly indigenous cultures. Over 90% of the population is Muslim so chicken and seafood are widely eaten there, with rice, corn and coconut being grown around the island. Here we have a rich chicken curry flavoured with turmeric, cassia and lemongrass served with crispy corn (jagung) fritters. There are over 300 varieties of sambal in Indonesia - no meal would be complete without the spicy condiment! - so on the side we've got a version called sambal bajak along with a popular Javanese salad known as urap sayur. |

Paused just long enough to take a picture! A lovely mixture of flavours and textures and can't go wrong with a prawn fritter starter.
Oh so tasty !
Such a variety of textures and tastes - we're so happy to hear how much you enjoyed it!
Approved by our 13months old daughter (minus the spicy Samual) who devoured her plate and asked for second! 10/10!
Oh, what a sweetheart! We are so pleased to hear how much she loved this dish - high praise indeed!
Absolutely delicious, took me nearly 3 hours from start to finish but well worth it! All the flavours compliment each other so well. The family loved it and everyone had seconds!

So tasty
YUM everything looks incredible! Cool table and bowls too!
Delicious spiced chicken with tangy Sambal Bajak on the side. A little fiddly to make, but we'll worth the effort. Would definitely make again!
Yum this looks great- hats off to the chef!
The only way to get through a lockdown weekend is by cooking one of these amazing recipes!

Ha it looks like you're ready for some serious cooking action in that hat!
Loved it. A bit too potato-y compared to what I'm used to. Would cut back on them next time, but there *will* be a next time!
Glad you enjoyed it! Happy spicing!
Lovely
Glad you enjoyed this- it looks like a brilliantly rich Bakwan Jagung and Sambal Bajak! Happy spicing!
We live in Florida and have just had our second Spicery meal. The temperature outside may be in the 90s but we really enjoyed the Javanese chicken curry especially the sambul. We can’t get all these spices over here and it so reminded us of our 2 months in Indonesia 30 years ago! Thank you! Jay and Dan
Thanks for sharing Jay and Dan, it's great to hear that you're enjoying the curry and spicy Sambal Bajak in some lovely warm weather!
Delicious meal with good range of accompanying dishes of various heats. Recipe card was straightforward and easy to follow, although preparation timings were optimistic. Suggest that fresh ingredients are prepped and ready to cook exactly when needed. Also, there was a lot of washing up................... Looking forward to my next curry adventure!
Thanks for your great feedback! We look forward to hearing about your future curry adventures!
Wow! We love making curries at home and have made hundreds over the years...this was by far the BEST we’ve ever tasted. The prawns (bakwan jagung) were out of this world as was the curry itself. The flavours from the sambal bajak took us right back to our holiday in Lombok a few years back. Can’t wait to try the next box! *****
Amazing to hear, glad you enjoyed this so much! We love it when a meal instantly transports us back to the incredible places we've visited!
Bakwan Jagung = Incredible corn and prawn fritters
YUM fantastic fritters, we wish we could try some!
Wow this was a great curry but have to say the stand out was the Bakwan Jagung. Oh my corn fritters with prawns in, never have I cooked something like this before so to learn a new technique and with amazingly tasty results a double win.
Fantastic! Everything looks absolutely delicious and is so beautifully presented too, definitely a win-win!
Delicious!
Looks fab! Happy spicing!
