Chennai is known as the gateway to South India and the local food reflects its location on the coast of Bay of Bengal with lots of seafood, coconut, rice and dried chillies. This fish curry is characterised by its deep intense flavour and rich colour from dried chillies, a tangy flavour from the tamarind and a real depth created by toasting some of the spices. We’re serving it with kurma, a delicious vegetable dish flavoured with white poppy seeds, coconut and yogurt and a cooling pineapple pachadi. For dessert, there’s a fabulous pink rose petal and cardamon flavoured strawberry kulfi for a delicious end to a spectacular South Indian feast!

Nice spicy curry with cooling sides. Finished off with a fabulous kulfi.

Great to hear how much you enjoyed this dreamy date night dish, Allen!

4/5

Great flavours in the 2 curries and the pineapple pachadi was a wonderful surprise! The tamarid curry worked really well with paneer instead of fish.

Great job adapting the recipe to use paneer instead of fish - it looks wonderfully rich and delicious!

5/5

Amazing depth of flavour in this delicious kulfi! A wonderful cooling treat after a delicious curry!

Beautiful presentation, Charmian! It's great to hear how much you enjoyed this sweet treat at the end of your Date Night feast!

3/5

These Southern Indian fish and veg curries made a refreshing change from our usual favourite, heavier, spicy ones. The tamarind fish curry packed a decent punch without overpowering the rest of the meal and the veg curry was subtle and light but provided a nice contrast. The pineapple side was like nothing we have had before - it was delicious!! The one thing I would change if I made again is that I would add some paratha on the side to mop up the delicious sauce.

Sounds like a good excuse to make it again! Really glad you enjoyed the new flavours. Happy spicing!

Looks delicious! Happy spicing!

5/5

This was a spicy curry, which really hit the spot. There was a fair amount of overlap of bits being cooked at the same time, so it was both a date night in the kitchen and then eating! Good fun, and a tasty outcome

Well we wouldn't want anything to be one sided! Glad you had fun!

Another lovely box from the spicery. We particularly enjoyed the curry and the vegetables dish which were both really tasty. We made up the curry with half the weight in prawns and added peppers to the mix. The veg we made up with a mix of baby corn and snap peas. The dessert is one that has featured three times in the year we’ve had a subscription. This strawberry version was nicer than previous ones. I ended up having to use frozen strawberries because trying to find fresh ones proved to be too hard.

Great idea using frozen berries and adding some extra veg - nice one!
