Product Developer

As our product range is growing all the time, we’re now looking for someone enthusiastic, articulate and self-motivated to join the team as a full-time Product Developer. We produce dozens of different products every month from subscription boxes to recipe kits and cookbooks. The entire development process happens in-house where we research, write, test, photograph, design and finally pack and send the product direct to our customers...

Relevant experience is always useful, but for us aptitude and interest in good food from around the world and all the countries, cultures and people that produce it are just as important!

You’d need to combine:

Exceptional attention to detail - having the ability to spot and correct mistakes in text and artwork, understanding the importance of a consistent tone of voice as well as being an accurate and competent writer yourself

A love for the subject - we’re equally interested in an obscure recipe from a particular region of India as in the latest food trend from an L.A food truck, and you’d need to be excited about all the possibilities this represents. You’d need to be genuinely interested in learning as much as possible about the food, places, history, people and cultures that inspire our products

A good sense of aesthetics - all our design and artworking is done in-house, and you’d need to be capable of contributing to this process, as well as always looking for ways to improve the look and feel of the products

This is an on-site role (central Bristol), and the working day would revolve around the communal staff lunch where all the recipes being tested that day, as well as the various weekly/monthly deadlines relevant to each product. Reporting to the managing director, you would be responsible for planning, checking, proof-reading and approving our new products, as well as supervising their listings on the website and responding to any feedback.

You would also spend some time every day researching new recipes, contributing to new product ideas, writing up approved recipes and creating spreadsheets for production.

Salary: Competitive depending on experience
Hours: Straight shifts, Monday – Friday 9-5

The job would cover various aspects of graphic design from artworking our brightly coloured recipe kits, subscription boxes and cookbooks, designing marketing material and graphics for the website, and being involved in our photography, social media, videos and web design.

We’re also continuously developing new packaging and making incremental changes to our designs so you’d need to contribute towards this creative process as the product and the brand itself evolves over time.

There will also be opportunities to be involved in our marketing and social media, as well as being prepared to help out at busy times in a more general way with customer service and order processing when the rest of the team are under pressure.

We love to reflect all the various colours, patterns and textures from different parts of the world in our packaging, so you should have a keen interest in learning more about the food, people, places, culture and history of all the various places that inspire our recipes (ideally including some experience from your own travels).

Practical experience of working with Adobe software (InDesign, Photoshop etc) is required, and we would expect you to be able to work to tight deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of work, as well as being articulate, positive, nice to people and happy spending your working day covered in a light dusting of ground spices.

The job is on-site (central Bristol 1 mile from Temple Meads), p/t (2-3 days per week) to suit within a Mon-Fri 9-5 week. We are also able to offer f/t hours combined with other admin and customer service responsibilities. Salaries are dependent on experience but would be competitive with industry rates.

The Spicery is a unique and highly innovative business - creating, making and then selling recipe kits direct to tens of thousands of customers around the world. We produce everything in-house from writing the recipes, blending and packing the spice mixes to designing the packaging, marketing, sales and customer service.

Over time, opportunities will come up to work in other parts of the business giving you a chance to develop your skills across a wide range of different areas. These would include customer service, sales and marketing, recipe testing and more!

Over time you’ll be able to specialise in areas of interest as new f/t roles are created and your skills and experience develop.

You'd need to be very personable, able to think and work fast, communicate well, be nice to people and be happy spending your working day on your feet covered in a light dusting of ground spices!

Ideally you’d have a genuine interest in good food from around the world and all the countries, cultures and people that produce it, however for us aptitude and interest are just as important as experience!
