Assistant Recipe Developer
The Spicery is an innovative recipe kit business based in Bristol, selling our products by post to tens of thousands of home cooks around the world.
We’ve grown by a huge amount in the last year or so, and are now looking for someone enthusiastic, articulate and highly motivated to be our new full-time Assistant Recipe Developer, working as part of the existing product development team.
We produce dozens of new recipes from all around the world every month - anything from a regional Indian speciality, to a traditional Ethiopian vegetarian meal or a Korean-Mexican taco inspired by an L.A. foodtruck. The entire development process happens in-house in the Spicery kitchen where we test / critique, test / critique, test / critique and retest again(!), until the whole team is satisfied the recipes are ready to be sent to our customers.
You need to combine:
A Traveller’s sense of curiosity - being really excited at the prospect of learning more about delicious food from all around the world, as well as all the people, places and culture that create it. Ideally you’ll already have a bit of travelling experience, and have had the opportunity to taste some great food from around the world for yourself
A Researcher's attention to detail - you’ll need to research any new recipe ideas methodically and thoroughly, and be willing to read around the subject to build up your background knowledge. You also need to have the ability to spot and correct mistakes in text and artwork, and understand the importance of a consistent tone of voice, as well as being a competent and accurate writer yourself
A Chef’s sense of taste - you need to LOVE(!!!!) food and cooking, and do it regularly for yourself, friends and family. You also need a good understanding of seasoning, and how to bring the best flavours out of ingredients. Ideally you’d have high quality reference points and/or relevant work experience (potentially from a restaurant or catering background, but aptitude and enthusiasm is equally important!)
This is an on-site role (central Bristol), and the working day would revolve around the communal staff lunch where all the recipes being tested that day are shared for our staff to taste at lunchtime. Reporting to the lead product developer, you would help to plan, prepare, cook, photograph and share the lunch, then record and respond to all the various feedback which goes back into the development process until the testing is complete.
You would also spend some time every day researching new recipes, contributing to new product ideas and writing up approved recipes ready for production. We have at least 20 different recipes in development at any one time, from the very first trials of a new idea to reworking old recipes, or the final test of a recipe to be photographed before being sent for production. You would be involved in all of these stages of development (from initiation of new ideas to final testing) across all our various product lines, within a long-established monthly development cycle.
We’re a small but fast-growing company and can offer you lots of opportunities to train and progress. There’s a friendly relaxed atmosphere here plus a travel fund to contribute towards your future trips to discover more of the best flavours from around the world.
