Current Vacancies

Assistant Recipe Testers (in-house)

The Spicery is a fast-growing recipe kit business (established in 2004), selling direct to tens of thousands of home cooks around the world.

We’ve more than doubled sales in recent years, so are now looking to scale up our test kitchen team with 2 new Assistant Recipe Testers (f/t or p/t) to help us expand our range of exciting, innovative and distinctive products.

We’re looking for outstanding people who are able to bring something new to the team - you might have first-hand knowledge of a key geographical region, a deep interest in a particular cuisine, particular skills in one area of cooking, or just relentless energy and determination to always keep learning and improving your culinary skills and knowledge. Relevant prior experience of some sort is useful, but aptitude and enthusiasm is much more important!

We produce dozens of new recipes from all around the world every month - anything from a regional Indian speciality, to a traditional Ethiopian vegetarian meal or a Korean-Mexican taco inspired by an L.A. food truck. The entire development process happens in-house in the Spicery kitchen in Bristol where we test / critique, test / critique, test / critique and retest again(!), until the whole team is satisfied the recipes are ready to be sent to our customers.

We work very fast and produce dozens of new recipes every month, so we’re looking for recipe testers who are capable of prepping and cooking multiple different recipes every day. The successful candidate would be able to work very accurately with great attention to detail, record thorough and methodical notes, and offer a carefully considered opinion on the end result as well as suggestions for further improvements.

You’d need to combine:

A Traveller’s sense of curiosity - You need to be really excited at the prospect of learning more about delicious food from all around the world, as well as all the people, places and cultures that create it. Ideally you’d already have a bit of travel experience, or have had the opportunity to taste some great food from around the world first-hand.

A Chef’s sense of taste - You need to LOVE(!!!!) food and cooking, and do it regularly for yourself, friends and family. You also need a good understanding of seasoning, and how to bring the best flavours out of ingredients. Ideally you’d have high quality reference points and/or relevant work experience (possibly from a restaurant or catering background), but this is not essential as our cooking style is domestic rather than commercial.

This is an on-site role in central Bristol, and the working day would revolve around the communal staff lunch where all the recipes being tested that day are shared for our staff to taste at lunchtime. Reporting to the lead product developer, you would help to plan, prepare, cook, photograph and share the lunch, then record and respond to all the various feedback which goes back into the development process until the testing is complete.

You would also spend some time every day researching new recipes, contributing to new product ideas and writing up approved recipes ready for production within a long-established monthly development cycle.

We’re a small but fast-growing company and always prefer to promote internally so it’s possible to progress, take on more responsibility and earn more pretty quickly. There’s a friendly relaxed atmosphere here plus a travel fund to contribute towards your future trips so you can discover more of the best flavours from around the world.

Salary: £23-27k

Hours – f/t Monday – Friday 8am-4pm, but p/t hours are also available

Based: on-site in the Spicery kitchen, Bristol (about 1 mile from the centre) - please note there is no option for remote working for this role!

Other benefits:

  • Travel grants to explore the world and bring back new ideas to the Spicery Kitchen
  • Treats at the end of each monthly production run
  • £200 bonus for major life events (e.g. buying a house/having a baby!)
  • Extra 5 days holiday after 2 years of service
  • £50 uniform allowance (you can wear what you like, but it must be colourful!)
  • Free food for testing recipes at home
  • Free spices for your own cooking at home
  • All Bank Holidays off PLUS Christmas Eve off
  • Annual Jobswap week to learn about another role within the company from a fellow member of staff
  • We've ALWAYS paid at least real Living Wage (including for ALL part-time and temp workers), and at least market rates for all other f/t roles
